8 Things to Do in NYC During the Summer
Summer has officially hit New York City! While many New Yorkers flee the city heat to relax away from the hustle and bustle, summer is my favorite time in New York. Read below for my favorite things to do to make the most of the long sunny days.
1. Visit a Greenmarket
The 45+ Greenmarkets scattered throughout the city are found in every borough. Most are open on the weekends and feature produce from local farmers, homemade goods, flowers, plants, and tons of other items. The Union Square Greenmarket is my favorite — it’s open all day Saturday and is filled with locals grabbing fresh produce.
2. Catch an Outdoor Movie
Want to watch a movie with a view? Outdoor movies can be found all around New York, showing all sorts of films set along the backdrop of the New York City skyline. My favorite movie nights are in Hunter’s Point South Park, Bryant Park, Hoboken, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
3. Relax in Central Park
Central Park is every New Yorker’s backyard. Tourists and locals alike spend warm summer days here enjoying nature. Spread a blanket across the grass, take an easy stroll, or join a pickup game of any sport if you’re feeling active.
4. Walk the West Side Highway
Many New Yorkers spend their free time wandering down the West Side Highway. Explore the piers that jut out into the Hudson River offering different activities and places to relax. My favorite spots are the Rooftop Park on Pier 57 and Little Island.
5. See a Mets or Yankees Game
Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or just looking for a fun night, New York baseball games are for everyone. You can find relatively cheap tickets online for either team, and both Citi Field and Yankee Stadium are easily accessible by the Subway. I prefer Yankee games since the atmosphere is more fun and party-oriented.
6. Visit a Museum
For something to do indoors, visit one of New York City’s world-famous museums. As a New Yorker, I forget how lucky we are to have access to so many incredible museums. Check out what exhibits are currently at The Met, explore the endless floors of the Museum of Natural History, or interpret some abstract art at the MoMA.
7. Soak Up the Sun at the Beach
You might not think of beaches when you think of New York City, but the seaside is a welcome escape on hot days. New Yorkers leave the city in droves to avoid the city heat and cool off in the Atlantic. Many beaches are accessible by the Subway or Ferry. I’ve spent some lovely, sunny summer days at Rockaway Beach and Long Beach.
8. Head to a Rooftop Bar or Restaurant
If New York City has one thing, it’s incredible rooftop views. Enjoy the sunset while looking over the scenic city at one of many rooftops. Westlight, The Crown, and The Flower Shop Rooftop are my favorites.
