7 Things to Do in Vienna, Austria
Vienna is rich in history, culture, nature, and art. It’s no wonder it was voted the World’s Most Livable City (more than once). I enjoyed every second in this beautiful city and can’t wait to visit again. See below for my top 7 things to do in Vienna!

1. Visit a Museum
There are so many museums in Vienna that I had a tough time choosing just one to visit. I decided on the Albertina Museum, which was filled with many different kinds of art and exhibits and had staterooms to explore. It isn’t too big, either, so you can see the whole museum in a few hours without feeling overwhelmed. My friend Caroline visited the Sisi Museum, which is situated inside the Imperial Palace and features exhibits focused on Empress Elisabeth of Austria. She loved it and recommended it for European history buffs.
2. Relax in the Parks
Vienna has been voted the Most Livable City in the World several times, and it’s easy to see why. Tons of parks and green spaces allow the Viennese people to relax and connect with nature. The Schonbrunner Gardens are very popular, and I spent some time at the winter market in Rathauspark, which was filled with people of all ages enjoying the skating rink and food stands.
3. Take a Free Walking Tour
Since my friend Caroline took me for my first walking tour in Budapest, I’ve been a huge fan of them, and our walking tour in Vienna didn’t disappoint. They’re such an easy way to see the best sites of a city, learn tons of history from a knowledgeable local, and even meet new people. Plus, it helps you get the lay of the land wherever you’re visiting. Just remember to bring cash to tip your guide!
4. Tour the Palaces
The Palaces of Vienna are truly awe-inspiring. We passed through the Imperial Palace on our walking tour, and I’d make this part of your Vienna itinerary. The history, architectural styles, and sheer size of the palace grounds made this one of my favorite sights to see in the city. The Belvedere Palace and the Schonbrunn Palace are other great choices that also have on-site gardens.
5. See an Opera
The Vienna Opera House is a stunning building filled with gorgeous architecture that’s worth the trip alone — a live performance is the cherry on top. Performances are constantly being held at the Opera House, and tickets can be pretty cheap (manage your expectations on the seats, though). Tickets sell out quickly, so try to buy them before you arrive in Vienna.
6. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located in the heart of Vienna. It’s a gorgeous work of Gothic and Romanesque architecture filled with Viennese history. You can enter the church for free and admire the beautiful interior, but anything else requires a ticket. We decided to buy a ticket to climb to the top of the spire, which was a pretty steep journey but worth it at the top, where you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the entire city.
7. Enjoy Viennese Cafe Culture
One of my favorite parts about Vienna is the deep cafe culture. Locals will sit at cafes for hours chatting, reading newspapers, or simply relaxing with a coffee or wine. I suggest trying one of Vienna’s specialty pastries, like apple strudel or Sachertorte. Cafe Tirolerhof is a great option slightly off the tourist path, recommended by a local tour guide.
