2. Hike Arthur’s Seat

Climbing Arthur’s Seat is a great way to exercise while experiencing Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is an ancient extinct volcano that visitors can hike. The hike is about 2.7 miles and is considered moderately challenging, but the breathtaking views at the top are well worth it.

3. Take a Walking Tour

I’m a big fan of walking tours as a way to learn and familiarize yourself with new places. Edinburgh is an especially great city for walking tours as it’s rich with history, culture, and folklore. There are tours that visit the city’s castles, haunted sites, and, for Harry Potter fans, some tours are dedicated to the landmarks that inspired the series.

4. Relax at the Water of Leith

The Water of Leith is a river that runs through Edinburgh. Starting in the Pentland Hills, it flows for about 24 miles, winding through Edinburgh, then out to the sea. A walkway lines the river providing a calming getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city center. As you walk, take in the lush greenery, wildlife, and scenic points along the path.

5. Walk the Royal Mile

Exploring Old Town’s most famous street is a must-do in Edinburgh. Starting from Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British Monarch in Scotland, and ending at Edinburgh Castle, there are tons of sights to see along the way. Browse through the many shops, indulge in a pint at a pub, or if you’re lucky, you might catch a bagpipe performance on the street.

6. Shop at Small Businesses

Endless souvenir shops line the Royal Mile, and New Town is filled with big-name stores, but look out for the small shops tucked throughout Edinburgh. Independent bookstores, cafes, and shops can be found all around the city and offer visitors the chance to support local businesses.

7. Visit Dean Village

Dean Village is like a fairytale setting with its gorgeous old buildings, vibrant greenery, and flowing river. What was once a milling hub in Edinburgh is now a quiet and peaceful break from the city for visitors and locals. It’s full of cultural and historical significance for Scotland which the city has worked hard to preserve.

As with everywhere when traveling, make sure to be respectful when visiting Dean Village — residents still live in the buildings here.
