Cheap Travel Guide
Last Updated: September 29, 2024
Traveling doesn’t have to be as expensive as people think. If you’re traveling on a budget, there are plenty of tips and tricks to cut down on travel costs. The little things add up, and even the smallest changes can save you some serious money when traveling. See below for my ultimate guide to cheap travel!

Pack Snacks
Packing snacks for the airport (and throughout your trip) can save you a ton of money. I usually keep nuts and a protein bar, especially when flying, to avoid the high airport snack costs.
I’ve found myself thanking GOD in moments when I discovered a smushed granola bar at the bottom of my backpack in a moment of hangriness.
Take Public Transit
Taking public transit while traveling is an incredible money-saver. I live in New York City, and an Uber to the airport averages around $100, whereas public transit can cost as little as a few dollars, depending on the airport I’m going to.
If you don’t have access to public transit, try cashing in a favor and asking a friend or family member to drive you. This way, you don’t get stuck with crazy airport parking fees.
Utilizing public transit at your destination will not only help you save money but will help you learn the city like a local.
Bring a Water Bottle
Save $5 by NOT buying a Smartwater at the airport and bringing a reusable water bottle. This has saved me hundreds of dollars, especially since you’ll have a water bottle at your destination.
If you’re traveling somewhere the water isn’t drinkable, I recommend a filter or purifying water bottle. This article from REI helps explain the difference between the two.
I have the GRAYL UltraPress Purifier, and it was great during my trip to El Salvador, where the water was unusable.
Travel During the Off-Season
Traveling during a destination’s off-season guarantees cheaper flights, accommodations, and fewer tourists. An all-around great idea!
I use the explore feature on Google Flights to see which destinations have the cheapest flights.
Buy Bags When You Buy Your Flight
Plan ahead and buy your carry-on or checked bag when buying the flight. Bags are more expensive to add after buying your ticket and are most expensive at the airport.
Lately, I’ve been challenging myself to only bring a carry-on bag. This way, you’ll avoid the cost of a checked bag and the hassle of lugging it around!
Limit Pre-Trip Shopping
This one might be tough for people with a shopping addiction habit like me, but limit how many new clothes, toiletries, and other supplies you buy before you travel.
Oddly enough, the more I travel, the less I feel like I need to buy things before a trip. I’ve become more aware of what I’ll actually use and wear on vacation.
I use Nuuly to rent clothes, which I LOVE for trips. It’s the perfect way to try out new pieces and is much cheaper than buying. Use this link to get $30 off your first month’s subscription!
Taelor is a great service for men’s clothing rentals.
Take Advantage of Travel Credit Cards
Travel credit cards offer great perks and points on travel-related purchases. I’ve only had my Chase Sapphire Preferred card for one year, but I’ve already been able to book a few flights and hotel rooms with the points I’ve earned.
I used NerdWallet’s Guide to compare different credit cards and pick the best fit.
Travel credit cards usually waive foreign transaction fees, which can add up quickly when traveling.
